Is My Son Sanctuary worth visiting?
Yes — especially if you are interested in history, ancient architecture, photography, or a cultural half-day outside Hoi An and Da Nang. My Son Sanctuary is very different from Hoi An Ancient Town: instead of old merchant houses and lantern streets, you get Cham Hindu temple towers in a quiet forest valley.

The site is not a full-day attraction for most travellers. It works best as a focused half-day trip: go early, spend enough time with the main tower groups, understand what you are looking at, then return to your hotel for lunch or continue to your next city.

Local photo tip: do not rush straight out after the temple groups. The lotus pond area inside My Son can be a beautiful check-in stop when the lotus is in bloom, with green mountains behind the wooden walkway. It is especially nice in the early morning or softer afternoon light.
Should you visit My Son from Hoi An or Da Nang?
Hoi An is the easier starting point because the drive is shorter and the countryside road feels more natural. Da Nang is still very practical, but you should start a little earlier to avoid arriving after the morning crowds.
Best time to visit My Son Sanctuary

Best overall: early morning
From Hoi An, depart 7:00–7:30 AM. From Da Nang, depart 6:45–7:00 AM. This usually gets you to My Son before 8:30 AM, when the valley is still cooler and the big tour buses have not fully arrived. Also good: after 2:00 PM
If you do not want an early start, the afternoon can still be a good choice. After 2:00 PM, the heat begins to soften and the crowds are often lighter than late morning.Avoid if possible: 9:30 AM–2:00 PM
This is the most uncomfortable window: more tour groups, stronger sun, hotter brick paths, and less shade. Many guests who arrive around 11:00 AM feel tired before they fully appreciate the site. How long to stay
Plan 2–2.5 hours inside. That gives enough time for the main tower groups, the museum, the electric shuttle and possibly the Cham dance show without turning the visit into a tiring walk.Tickets, electric shuttle and Cham dance show
The My Son entrance ticket includes access to the main site and the electric shuttle from the main gate toward the temple area. The shuttle saves a long hot walk of about 2 km before you even reach the ruins.

Best route options from Hoi An and Da Nang
Hoi An → My Son → Hoi An
The classic half-day route. Your driver picks you up at the hotel, follows the countryside road through Duy Xuyen, waits while you visit the sanctuary, then brings you back to Hoi An. This is the easiest choice for most Hoi An guests.Hoi An → My Son → Da Nang
Useful if you are checking out from Hoi An and ending the day at a Da Nang hotel, airport, train station or beach resort. Tell the driver in advance because luggage space and timing matter.Da Nang → My Son → Da Nang
Best for travellers staying in Da Nang city, My Khe Beach or near the airport who want a cultural half-day trip without moving hotels.Da Nang → My Son → Hoi An
A very practical route if you check out from Da Nang and move to Hoi An. You combine the transfer and sightseeing in one trip, saving both time and transport cost.Private car vs group tour vs Grab or taxi
Should you hire a guide at My Son Sanctuary?
Yes, especially for international visitors. My Son needs context. Without a guide, the site can look like red brick towers and broken walls. With a guide, you understand the Cham kingdom, Hindu gods like Shiva, the temple layout, war damage, and the old brick-building technique that still interests researchers today.
A local guide can usually be requested at the official information counter, subject to availability. As a practical guide price, expect around 100,000–150,000 VND per group, but confirm the current rate at the counter when you arrive.
ข้อผิดพลาดทั่วไปที่ควรหลีกเลี่ยง
- Arriving too late: if you leave at 9:00–10:00 AM, you may arrive during the hottest and most crowded part of the day.
- Wearing the wrong shoes: avoid high heels or slippery flip-flops. Paths include earth, old brick and uneven stone.
- Skipping sun protection: bring water, hat, sunglasses and light clothing. The temple zones have limited shade.
- Assuming Grab will be easy both ways: the return from My Son is the problem, not the ride there.
- Not hiring a guide: the ruins are much more meaningful with a local explanation.
- Trying to add too many stops: My Son is best as a clean half-day trip, not a rushed checklist.

Afternoon option
If guests do not want to wake up early, the afternoon option can still be pleasant. Start around 2:00 PM, visit when the sun is lower and the site is quieter, then return in the early evening. This option is better than arriving between late morning and early afternoon.
