Most travellers from Hoi An or Da Nang take an overnight sleeper bus to Phong Nha. A private car is a significantly more comfortable alternative — especially for families, groups with luggage, or anyone who does not want to spend a night on a bus.

Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to some of the most impressive cave systems in the world. The main visitor caves are Paradise Cave (Thien Duong — a 31 km dry cave with extraordinary formations), Phong Nha Cave (a river cave with boat entry), and Dark Cave (zip line, mud bath, and kayaking). All three require separate entrance tickets purchased at the site.

From Da Nang, subtract about 45 minutes from the above timing. Stops are fully flexible — tell the driver your preferences when you set off.

• Depart early. A 06:30 start from Hoi An gets you to Phong Nha by mid-afternoon. Departing after 08:00 risks arriving in the dark on mountain roads.
• Plan for 2 proper stops. Coffee around Hue (hour 3) and lunch around Dong Hoi (hour 5) breaks the drive into manageable sections.
• Book cave tickets in advance for Paradise Cave. Entrance tickets can sell out or have long queues on weekends and Vietnamese public holidays.
• Phong Nha town is small — most hotels and homestays are within walking distance of each other. Share your accommodation name when booking so the driver drops you at the right place.
• Consider 2 to 3 nights in Phong Nha — one cave per day is the comfortable pace. Rushing all three caves into one day is possible but tiring.
