Hoi An is more than its Ancient Town. The lantern-lit streets and Japanese Covered Bridge are worth seeing, but a short drive beyond the old quarter reveals a very different experience: family-run craft workshops, quiet rice fields, vegetable gardens, traditional basket boats and relaxed lunches beside the sea.
For international visitors staying in Da Nang, these places can be combined into a flexible day trip by private car. You do not need to visit every village or book a fixed package tour. Choose a few experiences you genuinely enjoy, then finish with Hoi An's riverside atmosphere in the early evening.
Why Hoi An Is More Than Just the Ancient Town
Hoi An's historic streets are only one part of the story. Across the river and along the quieter roads around town, families still practise carpentry, weaving, pottery and traditional food-making. Elsewhere, visitors can get their hands muddy in vegetable gardens, glide through nipa palms in a basket boat or enjoy the countryside with a flock of ducks.
These are not all scheduled attractions with identical opening times. Some activities take place in family homes and depend on what local people are doing that day. That spontaneity is part of their appeal, but it also means travelers should keep their plans flexible.
1. Cam Kim Countryside: Carpentry, Mat Weaving and Rice-Paper Making
Across the Thu Bon River from Hoi An's old streets, Cam Kim offers village roads, local workshops and a slower rhythm of daily life. It is an especially interesting stop for visitors who enjoy meeting local people instead of moving from one major attraction to the next.
Kim Bong Carpentry Village
Kim Bong Carpentry Village is in Cam Kim. Here, visitors can watch artisans shaping and carving wood. Where a local workshop welcomes guests to participate, you may also be able to try simple chiselling or carving under the craftsperson's guidance.
Mat weaving and rice-paper making in Cam Kim
In other parts of the Cam Kim countryside, visitors can meet local households who weave traditional mats or make banh trang rice paper. Trying to spread a thin, even layer of batter or work on a weaving frame often gives visitors a new appreciation for these everyday skills.
Based on Minh Vu Travel's local arrangements, advance reservations are not normally required for these informal household visits. A small voluntary thank-you of around USD 1–2 per activity is customary in the experiences we have arranged, but this is not a fixed entrance ticket. Participation always depends on the household's availability and willingness to welcome visitors.

Phù hợp với: couples, culture lovers, photographers and families with curious children. Allow enough time to enjoy the village instead of rushing between every workshop.

2. Thanh Ha Pottery Village: Try Shaping Clay by Hand
At Làng gốm Thanh Hà, visitors can watch local artisans work with clay and try shaping a small item themselves. It is a tactile, easy-to-understand experience and a rewarding choice for children who enjoy making things.
One practical detail matters: a freshly shaped piece of pottery needs drying and firing. Do not expect to carry your own newly made clay item away immediately. If you want a souvenir to take home the same day, you can buy a ready-made piece from a local craftsperson.

Phù hợp với: first-time visitors and families with children. Confirm workshop availability and any entrance or participation fees locally.
3. Tra Que Vegetable Village: Be a Farmer for a Little While
Làng rau Trà Quế is more than a place to photograph neat green garden beds. Visitors can join an organised farming experience, plant vegetables, water crops using local techniques and learn about the work behind herbs and vegetables served in Hoi An's kitchens.
For travelers who want a more immersive visit, a local lunch can sometimes be arranged as part of the experience. Farming activities are paid experiences and should be arranged in advance. Ask the organiser to confirm the current activity price and whether lunch is included; do not assume the garden visit and a full workshop cost the same.
Phù hợp với: food lovers, couples and families looking for hands-on rural activities. Choose Tra Que instead of another stop if you want enough time to enjoy the farming experience.
4. Duck Stop Hoi An: Laugh, Relax and Enjoy the Rice Fields
Some travelers come to Hoi An for temples and history; others just want an afternoon that makes everyone smile. Duck Stop in the Hoi An countryside is that kind of outing. Visitors can feed ducks, interact with the flock, take fun photographs and relax in the open rural surroundings.
The setting matters almost as much as the ducks: the nearby fields give a real sense of village life. When the rice is ripe, the golden landscape can be especially photogenic, although rice-field colours change with the farming season.
Based on the locally confirmed arrangement shared by Minh Vu Travel, the experience is around 100,000 VND per person và bao gồm one complimentary drink. Booking ahead is recommended so your group does not have to wait. Comfortable casual clothes are fine. Confirm the current price and inclusions when reserving because third-party activity prices can change.

5. Cam Thanh Coconut Forest: Choose a Gentle Basket Boat Ride
Cam Thanh's Bay Mau Coconut Forest is one of Hoi An's best-known countryside attractions. Traditional round basket boats travel along waterways lined with nipa palms. Some areas offer lively spinning performances, but that is not the only way to enjoy the visit.
For families, older travelers or anyone who prefers a peaceful experience, Minh Vu Travel recommends asking for a gentle basket boat ride through the palms rather than a spinning performance. Let the operator know your preference before boarding.

6. Make Your Own Hoi An Lantern—and Take It Home
Hoi An's lanterns are beautiful to see at night, but making one yourself adds a more personal memory to the trip. Many workshops around the town welcome walk-in visitors, subject to space and the day's availability.
Express workshop
Usually around 45–60 phút. A practical choice when you have only one day and want to continue to the Ancient Town afterwards.
Full traditional workshop
Usually around 2–2,5 giờ. Better for travelers who want a slower, more detailed craft session instead of visiting many places.
Unlike pottery that needs firing, your completed lantern can be taken home the same day. If you are travelling with a larger group or during a busy holiday, arrange a workshop ahead of time.
Phù hợp với: families, couples and anyone who wants to bring home something they made themselves.
7. Take a Proper Lunch Break at An Bang Beach
A relaxed day in Hoi An needs a good pause between morning activities and afternoon sightseeing. Bãi biển An Bang is an appealing place for a seaside lunch, especially after walking through villages or working in the gardens.
One restaurant Minh Vu Travel suggests to guests is Shore Club at An Bang Beach. Its beachfront setting and range of Vietnamese and international dishes make it a convenient place to eat and unwind. This is a recommendation, not a required stop; guests are free to choose another restaurant that fits their taste and budget.
If you would like a beachfront table at a particular time, ask for help reserving ahead. Restaurant meals are paid directly at the venue.

Suggested 1-Day Hoi An Countryside Itinerary from Da Nang
This is one possible route, not a fixed programme. You can swap, shorten or skip stops. It works best if your group chooses a few meaningful experiences instead of trying to visit every place in this guide.
Time and pricing: A Da Nang hotel pickup at 8:00 AM and departure from Hoi An at 7:00 PM means the vehicle is in use for roughly 12 hours including the return drive, not an 8-hour tour. Your private car quote depends on selected stops, total duration and vehicle type. Confirm the exact plan and price before booking.
Prefer a Later Start? Try a Countryside Afternoon and Hoi An by Night
If you would rather relax at your Da Nang hotel in the morning, a shorter countryside outing can be just as enjoyable.
- Đầu giờ chiều: Leave Da Nang and head towards the Hoi An countryside.
- First stop: Duck Stop for a fun rural experience, or choose Tra Que for a gentler garden visit.
- Bài tiếp theo: Cam Thanh Coconut Forest for a calm basket boat ride through the palms.
- Buổi tối: Walk through Hoi An Ancient Town, have dinner and enjoy the lantern-lit riverside.
- Optional later return: See Hoi An Memories Show instead of trying to squeeze it into the standard 7:00 PM departure.
The afternoon route is especially attractive to families who want a little countryside fun without a long series of craft workshops. Actual timing depends on the activities you choose, their operating hours and your preferred return time.
Finish with Hoi An Ancient Town, Riverside Lanterns or a Cultural Show
Exploring beyond the Ancient Town does not mean you have to miss the old streets. Many visitors enjoy finishing the day there, when the riverside cafés and lanterns give the town a different atmosphere.
Private car drop-off and pickup are flexible. Depending on traffic rules and pedestrian zones, your driver may use an accessible meeting area around Song Hoai Square or near Hoi An Central Market. Minh Vu Travel will explain the exact place and arrange the return pickup in a convenient permitted location; the car does not drive through pedestrian-only streets.
If you would like to enjoy a river lantern experience, allow time near dusk or after dark rather than assuming every activity is available at the same time of day.

What about Hoi An Memories Show?
Hoi An Memories Show is an optional late-evening alternative. The published schedule lists the main show at approximately 8:00–9:00 PM and no performance on Tuesdays. If you choose the show, your return trip to Da Nang must be arranged after the show; it does not fit a plan that leaves Hoi An at 7:00 PM. Confirm the actual performance schedule and ticket conditions before booking.

Local Planning Tips: Booking, Payments and Choosing Your Stops
Let your interests lead
Families may choose Duck Stop, pottery and an express lantern class; couples may prefer Cam Kim crafts, a beach lunch and a sunset stroll. No single combination is best for everyone.
Book selected activities ahead
Duck Stop and organised Tra Que farming experiences are better arranged in advance. Many lantern shops welcome walk-ins, while informal Cam Kim household visits usually do not require a reservation.
Bring comfortable clothes and VND cash
Wear comfortable walking shoes, bring sun protection and keep some small notes for household contributions, workshops and food. Rice fields change with the season; golden rice cannot be guaranteed year-round.
Know who guides the activities
Your Minh Vu Travel driver handles transport, stops and meeting arrangements. Local households, artisans or activity providers guide hands-on experiences. A professional sightseeing guide is a separate service if requested.
Are the experiences included in the private car price?
No. Minh Vu Travel can help contact providers and coordinate bookings for selected activities, but guests pay the activity, workshop and meal fees directly at each location. The transportation quote is separate and depends on the actual route, duration and vehicle size. This keeps your day flexible and avoids forcing you into an all-inclusive package.
Is a private car necessary?
Not for everyone. Visitors staying in Hoi An can enjoy some nearby countryside areas by bicycle. For a family or group starting in Da Nang, however, a private car makes it easier to combine villages, the beach and the Ancient Town in one day without cycling long distances.
