Hoi An is compact enough to walk much of the centre, but the best experiences — the pottery village at Thanh Ha, the basket boats in Cam Thanh, the quiet vegetable fields at Tra Que — are spread across 10 to 15 km of countryside roads that are genuinely pleasant by car and genuinely tedious by bicycle in the heat. A private car covers all of it comfortably.
This tour is not guided in the traditional sense — your driver takes you between locations and can share context on each stop, but the focus is on giving you private transport and flexibility rather than a narrated walking tour. What makes the difference between a good day and a great one in Hoi An.
- Go to the Ancient Town first. By 10:30 the main streets fill with tour groups. The Japanese Covered Bridge, Tan Ky Old House, and the Assembly Halls are all significantly more atmospheric — and photographable — before the crowds arrive.
- The evening half-day is underrated. Start around 15:30, walk the Ancient Town in the late afternoon, and stay until the lanterns come on at dusk. The light on the Thu Bon River at golden hour is one of the best things to see in Hoi An.
- Basket boats in Cam Thanh are a genuine experience — a local boatman spinning a round bamboo boat through the water palms. It takes about 30 minutes and is genuinely fun if you have children or just want something different from the town.
- Wear shoes you can walk in for the Ancient Town — the old streets are uneven stone and get slippery after rain.
- An Bang Beach is 5 km from the Ancient Town and most people staying in the old town never make it there. It is quieter and less developed than China Beach and worth the short drive.
