Go to the Ancient Town first. By 10:30 the main streets fill with tour groups. The Japanese Covered Bridge and the Assembly Halls are all significantly more atmospheric before the crowds arrive.
The evening half-day is underrated. Start around 15:30, walk the Ancient Town in the late afternoon, and stay until the lanterns come on at dusk.
Basket boats in Cam Thanh are a genuine experience — a local boatman spinning a round bamboo boat through the water palms. About 30 minutes and genuinely fun if you have children.
Wear shoes you can walk in for the Ancient Town — the old streets are uneven stone and get slippery after rain.
An Bang Beach is 5 km from the Ancient Town — quieter and less developed than China Beach and worth the short drive.
