Private Car — Hoi An to Tam Thanh Mural Village (Round Trip)

Tam Thanh is not on most organised tour itineraries — which is exactly why it feels worth going. The murals cover the walls of working homes, fishing boats, and alleyways. The beach behind the village is quiet and usually uncrowded. A private car is the most practical way to get there from Hoi An and back on your own schedule.

Tam Thanh Mural Village started as a community art project in 2016 — Vietnamese and South Korean artists painted the walls of the entire village, turning a quiet coastal community into an open-air gallery. The project has since expanded with new murals added regularly. The fishing boats painted with faces on the harbour are among the most photographed images in Central Vietnam.

Because the village is small and not on a main road, getting there independently requires planning. A private car from Hoi An with driver waiting is the simplest arrangement — you arrive when you want, spend as long as you need, and leave when you are ready.

• Go early. By 10:00 the village starts getting busier with day-trip groups. Before 09:00 it is quiet, the light is soft, and the streets feel like they belong to you.
• Bring a good camera. The murals are dense and varied — wide walls, narrow alleys, boat hulls, doorways. Wide angle and something that handles backlight are both useful.
• The beach is worth 20 minutes. Walk through the village to the waterfront — the painted boats on the water with the murals behind them is the image most people remember.
• Dress respectfully. This is a working fishing village, not a tourist attraction. Residents live here — be considerate when photographing homes or people.
